Remains of Yesterday

The Valley bottom clutched its past
fearful of progress.Reminders lay
everywhere, jarring my nostalgia.

Upended tram wheels rusted, never to spin
again along the broken overgrown line
in despair of its lost destination.

Brown-tufted grass, wind-fanned on
pregnant coal heaps ill disguised the
underlying wretched and surplus blackness.

Cinder boulders of red ash like giant mammoths
squatted next to the stone-strewn river
polluted with waste of coal and iron.

Facing the chimneyed ironwork ruins
two green-stoned Roundtowers, one derelict,
completed a debris of childhood memories
