You can browse in a bookshop,
pick up a book,
flick it open and take a look
at the style and content, get a sense
of whether it's just
a hollow pretence.

But when culture-vultures
make a fuss
of the latest play that is a must,
or a presentation of music and dance
that critics recommend -
there ain't no chance

that intelligent folk
will win the day
and insist that there just ain't any way
they'll go and watch pretentious shite;
the air-heads will label them
philistine. Right!
