Message to Maggy
He's six now Maggy
not the toddler you knew
He's quick like you
to laugh, to learn, to cry
full of energy and curiosity
Concerned like you were
He sees a tear and feels it
as if from his eye
He reads like one much older
Trading a story at bedtime
for the one I read him
Asks questions that cause
stutters in amazed adults
He's six now and not the little one
who played with the buttons
of your IV machine
sending nurses into fits
of terror then laughter
You should see him
smile the way you smiled
with the same green eyes
The fierce way he hugs
overwhelming like you were
He's six and so much like you,
like we were, happy
full of God's grace
Yet like us he won't last
He'll grow into something more
A young man puzzled
by the happy tears of an old man
