listening to irish folk
i tap my feet to the highwaymen and drinkers
laugh with the jokers and scallywag womanisers
shake my fist at the helpless huzzah of rebels slashed
by the pikes of brutal occupiers; more often though
I sink my beer and weep with lonely mothers
who watch their children starve in the midst of plenty
and i feel the centuries fuse to hopelessness
so many irelands so many irelands still
